At The Gate, we hold a simple but life-changing conviction: God is continually communicating with His people. Not occasionally. Not only in crisis. Not only through a select few. But continually — through His Word, His Spirit, and His gentle presence woven into the fabric of our days.
To live a prophetic lifestyle is to live awake to this reality. It is to align ourselves with God’s thoughts and ways as we read Scripture, worship, and spend time with Him. It is to believe that the God who spoke the world into being is still speaking today — and that His voice brings guidance, encouragement, correction, and revelation.
Jesus said,
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27 NIV)
This is not a promise for the spiritually elite. It is the birthright of every child of God.
But Scripture doesn’t stop there. Paul urges us:
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
(1 Corinthians 14:1)
Prophecy is not a fringe activity. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit, available to anyone who asks and earnestly seeks to grow in it. And when it is practiced with humility, accountability, and love, it becomes one of the most life-giving expressions of the Spirit in the church.
So what does it look like to live a prophetic life — not just inside church meetings, but in the ordinary rhythms of everyday life?
Let’s explore.
1. Hearing God Is Normal for Every Believer
Many Christians quietly assume that hearing God is for “other people” — the spiritually mature, the confident, the extroverted, the prophetic team. But Jesus dismantles that idea with one sentence: “My sheep listen to my voice.”
If you belong to Him, you can hear Him.
Often His voice comes through Scripture — a verse that suddenly feels alive, a phrase that lingers, a story that mirrors your own. Sometimes it comes as a gentle nudge, a picture, a dream, a sense of peace, or a sudden clarity. Sometimes it comes through the wise words of another believer. Sometimes it comes through circumstances that align in ways only God could orchestrate.
The point is not the method.
The point is the relationship.
Prayer becomes less of a monologue and more of a continual conversation — a sharing of hearts. We speak, and He listens. He speaks, and we learn to recognise the tone, the texture, the tenderness of His voice.
2. Why Some People Worry About Prophecy
It’s understandable that some Christians feel cautious about prophetic gifts. Two concerns often surface:
Concern 1: “What if people value impressions more than Scripture?”
This is a valid fear — and a necessary boundary.
At The Gate, we hold Scripture as the final authority. Any prophetic word must align with the character and truth of God revealed in the Bible. Prophecy never replaces Scripture; it simply applies Scripture’s truth to a specific moment, person, or situation.
Concern 2: “What if prophecy is misused or manipulative?”
Again, a real concern.
This is why we have intentionally developed a Prophetic Community — a safe, accountable space where people can grow in the gift while being guided, supported, and corrected when needed. We use simple, biblical guidelines to ensure that prophecy is delivered with humility, clarity, and love.
Prophecy is powerful, but like any gift, it must be stewarded well. Accountability protects both the giver and the receiver.
3. Living in Accordance With What God Has Spoken
A prophetic lifestyle is not just about hearing God — it’s about responding.
When God speaks, He invites us into alignment. Sometimes that means adjusting our priorities. Sometimes it means stepping out in faith. Sometimes it means waiting with trust. Sometimes it means letting go of something that no longer fits the season.
Prophetic words are not decorations; they are invitations.
They shape how we pray, how we plan, how we persevere. They remind us of who God is and who we are becoming. They anchor us when circumstances contradict the promise. They help us interpret our lives through God’s perspective rather than our own.
To live prophetically is to live responsive.
4. Believing That God Is at Work in Every Moment
A prophetic lifestyle is not confined to church gatherings. It is a way of seeing the world.
It means believing that nothing happens by chance.
That God is present in the school run, the commute, the supermarket queue, the unexpected conversation, the quiet moment of reflection. It means trusting that He is weaving purpose into the ordinary and speaking through the seemingly insignificant.
When we live with this awareness, our days become charged with possibility.
Interruptions become invitations.
Coincidences become confirmations.
Challenges become opportunities for God to reveal His wisdom and presence.
5. Hearing God for Others: Becoming an Encourager
Prophecy is never about showing off spiritual sensitivity. It is about serving others.
Paul says that prophecy is for “strengthening, encouraging, and comforting” (1 Corinthians 14:3). When we listen for God’s heart for others, we become carriers of hope. We become people who point others to Jesus — not to ourselves.
Sometimes this looks like sharing a Scripture that comes to mind.
Sometimes it’s offering a picture or impression that brings clarity.
Sometimes it’s simply speaking words of encouragement that reflect God’s heart.
The goal is always the same:
To build up, not to impress.
To bless, not to control.
To reveal Jesus, not ourselves.
A Community That Hears God Together
At The Gate, we are committed to cultivating a prophetic culture that is biblical, accountable, and full of love. A community where people grow in confidence, humility, and discernment. A community where hearing God is normal — and responding to Him is joyful.
Living a prophetic lifestyle is not about being spectacular.
It is about being attentive.
It is about walking closely with the One who loves us.
It is about joining God in what He is already doing in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
And when we live this way, the world becomes a place where God’s voice is not distant or rare — but familiar, trusted, and beautifully near.
