God’s Healing and Faithful Provision
In a recent Sunday service, Alastair shared about how he witnessed God’s healing power in Brazil. His message reminded me of God’s healing and faithful provision to my family.
Hailey, my youngest daughter unlike her siblings, was a sleeping angel when she was little. She grew up happily, ate everything I gave her, and was such a joy to raise. However, she was also rather clumsy and fell quite often. She bumped her head on the floor, the bed, over the fence, you name it! That was why she had a little dent on her forehead when she was little.
Once, her kindergarten teachers asked me how she had got a bruise on her forehead, as to make sure that it was not a case of child abuse or neglect, which is a criminal offence in Hong Kong. Although I already had some experience raising children, I thought this was simply normal for a toddler who was a bit clumsier than her siblings.
One day, when I was taking Hailey to the school bus stop as usual, another parent whose child also attended Hailey’s school came up to me and asked, “Have you noticed that Hailey’s eyes are slightly misaligned?”
“Yes, I have,” I replied. “Her left eye tends to drift outward when she looks at things in the distance.”
My original plan was simply to mention it to the community nurse when the free eye checks for four-year-old children were available. But when this parent also noticed it, I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to take action. So I decided to make an appointment with a private ophthalmologist.
Looking back, I can see that God was already guiding us, even before we knew what was happening.
As Proverbs 3:5–6 says:
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
I will never forget how shocked I was on the day we visited the ophthalmologist. Hailey was called into the consultation room after only a short wait. The ophthalmologist carefully examined her eyes using different instruments and lights. He then used a trial frame to test her vision.
He tested her left eye first and asked her to read aloud the letters on the screen. Hailey turned her head and became a little unsettled. She could not read a single letter.
The ophthalmologist asked me whether Hailey, who was only three years old, could recognise all 26 English letters. I told him that she could.
He then enlarged the letters, one level at a time, until eventually the biggest letter “K” appeared on the screen. Each time he asked Hailey what the letter was, she could not tell him — not even when the “K” was at its largest.
That was when I realised something was seriously wrong with her left eye. I had so many questions: What had happened to her eye? How long had she been unable to see properly? Why had we not noticed it earlier?
Then the ophthalmologist tested her right eye. The contrast was astonishing. Hailey could read every letter, at every size, without any difficulty.
The ophthalmologist gave us a preliminary diagnosis. Her right eye was slightly long-sighted, but otherwise everything looked fine. However, he was concerned about her left eye and recommended that we should have it assessed further at a hospital.
At that point, we still did not know what lay ahead of us. But God knew.
God had already prepared what we would need, even before we knew we needed it.
My husband, Edward, had previously worked for the Ophthalmology Department of a university in Hong Kong for a couple of years, before Hailey was born. As such, he knew several ophthalmologists. He quickly contacted one of them and arranged an appointment.
During that consultation, Hailey was diagnosed with -11.00 dioptres of myopia, -2.75 dioptres of astigmatism and amblyopia in her left eye. In simple terms, her left eye had extremely limited vision.
The ophthalmologist advised us about treatment and the next steps. However, he was not a paediatric ophthalmologist, so we needed to find a specialist with experience in treating children.
Once again, God provided.
God led us to a professor who was a highly experienced paediatric ophthalmologist, with extensive research and clinical experience in myopia control and amblyopia. But what amazed us even more was that he was also a Christian.
We were truly in awe of God’s provision.
The professor carefully examined Hailey and explained the treatment to us. On one of our visits, he told us that, Hailey might be able to regain up to 80% of the vision in her left eye after treatment with eye patching.
When I heard it, I froze a moment, I did not want to settle for 80%.
Fervently I asked God to restore Hailey’s vision completely.
At that time, the full-coverage cotton eye patches for glasses that we needed were not readily available in Hong Kong. But, again, God provided. We managed to find suitable ones made in the UK and had them shipped to Hong Kong.
You can image how upset a 3-year-old child would be with something covering her eye. Yet God gave us another blessing: Hailey was incredibly cooperative throughout the eye-patching treatment. She wore the eye patch without much resistance, and we were so thankful to see that her vision was gradually improving.
Throughout the treatment we trusted in God. He was faithful, He would give us the best outcome.
After three years treatment, the professor did a final examination on Hailey’s eye sight. He confirmed that her vision had fully recovered. Yes, fully recovered, not 80%!
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
The professor was uncertain of a complete recovery, yet God answered far beyond what we had hoped for: He restored Hailey’s vision completely and even reduced her myopia from -11.00 to -7.00 dioptres.
It reminds me of Ephesians 3:20:
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.
Before we moved to the UK, we visited the professor one last time to make sure that Hailey’s condition was stable and that her treatment had been successfully completed. The results were very reassuring. Even now, we are deeply thankful to God for His faithful provision throughout those years.
Looking back, I can see God’s footprints everywhere along the path.
He sent another parent to notice something that we had overlooked.
He prompted me by the Holy Spirit to arrange an eye examination earlier than we had originally planned.
He provided experienced ophthalmologists who could diagnose and treat Hailey.
He provided a paediatric ophthalmology professor who had the expertise which was Hailey exactly needed — and who was also a Christian.
He provided the eye patches we needed, even when they were not readily available in Hong Kong.
He gave Hailey the calmness and cooperation to go through years of treatment.
And miraculously, He answered a mother’s desperate prayer for a complete restoration.
Psalm 103:2–3 says:
2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits — 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.
I share this testimony not because I think every prayer for healing will be answered in exactly the same way, but because our God is faithful. Sometimes we see His answer immediately; sometimes we have to wait; and sometimes His answer may look different from what we expect.
But through Hailey’s story, I have learned that God is already at work long before we realise what is happening.
He goes before us. He opens doors. He sends the right people at the right time. He provides what we need, often in ways we could never have planned ourselves.
Looking back at Hailey’s journey, I cannot but say:
God is faithful.
God provides.
God heals.
And God is worthy of all our praise.
To God be the glory. Amen.
10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
