No More Fears

I was brought up in a well-disciplined and upright family. We were trained all through our years as children to be church goers, respectful honourable obedient and truthful.

As a result of this, I grew up being very confident and learning to depend on my good works for acceptance by God.

I was pretty positive that my church attendance, good deeds and righteous lifestyle were sufficient to guarantee me a place in heaven whenever I died. However sometime in 1981 during my first year in university I met a new friend who asked me a question. She said “if you were to die today are you sure you will go to heaven?” Guess what my answer was! With confidence I said “of course I will!” and even felt insulted that she had asked me such a question!

She asked me why I was so confident. I answered her proudly by listing all my church activities, prayers, righteous deeds, honesty and obedience etc. She then told me something that shocked me!

She said in the Bible, the Isaiah 64:6, it says

6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

She said our righteousness was just as filthy rags — worthless and could not guarantee us a place in heaven!

What! All I had done were worthless and could not guarantee me a place in heaven? My world collapsed because my only hope of getting to heaven was totally destroyed! I did not want to go to hell, I quickly asked her what I needed to do to be sure of heaven.

She told me I needed to repent of my sins and admitted that I could not save myself. I needed to believe that Jesus came to the world to die for all my sins and I needed invite him into my life!

I did it. Since the 26th of March 1981, my life has been totally transformed.

I learnt to develop a close relationship with God and received His guidance and direction. I received the assurance that all my sins were forgiven and that I was a child of God. Jesus became very real to me and I have also received healing in my body and mind many times through the power of the Holy Spirit who now lives in me. I have also learnt to cast all my worries over on Him because i know He cares for me and is always there to help me! What a blessing!

Now, I have a new reason why I will be going to heaven — He took my place in the cross and I am trusting in His finished works not on my worthless works! How about you?

If you are not certain whether you will go to heaven, you can do the same by saying a simple but sincere prayer, confessing your sins, acknowledging Jesus is the only true God, he shed his blood on the cross to wash away all your sins and accepting Jesus into your heart as Lord and Saviour. It’s the best life ever!  One full of purpose, joy, peace and God’s unconditional love and the daily help of the Holy Spirit in all areas of life.

4 I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears.
(Psalm 34:4)
